Asexuality is a very broad term since its definition is so simple many things can fall under it. You have people who are sex-negative. These people do not like having sex, for some people they might not even like talking about the act. There are people who are sex-neutral. These people don’t find any joy having sex with a person, but may be willing to have sex with a partner since they enjoy it or do it to try to get a child. The third type is sex-positive. This means that the person may enjoy consuming media that details sexual acts such as fanfiction or romance books, or even enjoy actions such as masturbation and having sex. The only defining thing you need to have is a lack of sexual attraction. As you can tell asexuality covers a broad spectrum, below is a list of things some “what ifs” to find out if you are asexual.
What if I:
These can still mean you are asexual; if you have chosen to identify as asexual but check something off this list it does not mean you can’t be asexual. On the other hand, you can check off none of this list and still be asexual, NONE of the things listed above changes weather or not you are asexual.
But what if I only experience it a little, or only occasionally? That’s called grey-sexual, a type of asexuality that you can be sexually attracted to someone sometimes or very rarely.
But what if I don’t gain romantic attraction? That’s called being aromantic and is a different topic. It is not uncommon for asexuals to also be aromantic but whatever type of romantic attraction you have does not affect if you are asexual.
But also remember, this is just a label. If you find that calling yourself asexual works, use it, if you find down the line it no longer works for you, you can easily choose not to use the term anymore. It’s live writing on a whiteboard, it will last forever if you leave it but it is easy to erase and write something new.
